Every time I start a conversation via video chat, I quickly notice that my attention begins to wander. Instead of focusing on the interlocutor, I can start looking at the background, get stuck on notifications on my phone, or even think about something completely unrelated to the current conversation. This leads to me losing interest in the conversation, and it becomes superficial and unproductive. How to learn to concentrate on a conversation and minimize distractions?

The first thing to do is to create a comfortable and quiet place for communication. Choose a quiet room where extraneous sounds and people will not distract you. Make sure that there are a minimum number of distracting objects in your environment. If possible, use headphones to help you better focus on the voice of the interlocutor.
The second important step is to remove all potential distractions. Turn off notifications on your phone and computer, remove all unnecessary tabs in the browser. Create rules for yourself: if you are in a chat, do not look at social networks and do not check your mail.
Train your attention. You can use various techniques for this. One is mindfulness: every time you notice that you’ve wandered, gently bring your attention back to the other person and the conversation. This takes practice, but it will get easier with time.
It’s also important to be interested in the other person. Ask questions, engage in the discussion, and be genuinely curious. This will help you stay engaged and focused on the conversation.
Finally, remember that practice makes perfect. The more often you actively try to focus on the conversation, the faster it will become a habit. Over time, your attention will improve, and you’ll be able to enjoy video chats more.
